iPhone battery problem

Weird problem today — I was watching a bit of video on my iPhone, then stopped & went away for a while — it had more than 50% charge left when I walked away. When I came back, it was dead — felt warm to the touch. No buttons would work, black screen, nothing. Rebooting wouldn’t work at all. I plugged it in for a while and after an hour or so it showed that it was charging again, but at about 5% — now, after charging most of the afternoon, looks like it’s up over 90%. Not sure what happened, but will be watching it.

  1. Not three hours after I read this, I had the same problem. I used my iPhone to listen to a couple of songs around… oh… maybe 9 or 10 pm tonight (I was at the office), and I only have a couple of albums on there, so I only used it for a little bit (no more than a half hour). When I put it to sleep, it had 75+% battery left (because I didn’t use it much today). When I got up to go home about a half hour, it was dead.Did you have your headphones in it? I left them plugged into the jack; I wonder if that causes it to do something that drains its power.I did some searches at the first few iPhone forum sites Google brought up, and I read complaints in general about the battery life, but nothing like this. :-/

  3. Same thing just happened to me. When I put the iPhone to sleep last night, it was showing a full charge. First thing this morning I go to use my iPhone, only to find it completely drained. The phone didn’t feel warm to the touch.I am bummed.

  4. I just had the same problem as Drained. I charged the battery fully before I went to bed. I set my alarm to wake me up, but it didn’t. Only to find out that it was completely drained. I woke up just a lil late but couldn’t call the office to let them know. Then I ran into traffic. I couldn’t make a single call.I need to find out how to effectively report this.

  7. Same problem yesterday. I was casually using my iPhone through out the work day for music, calls, email, etc. This to me is normal use to compared to every other day. The only difference was that my battery was like half, then dropped to 20%, then dropped to 10% and then I was screwed…had to mid day charge. I had it plugged in and it wasn’t really charging that well, so I held down the top off button and the circle button to do a full warm reboot. I did notice that I had bluetooth on, but I dont think that was causing the problem. Could it be an application getting in a loop? Maybe like Safari or email…I know if you let he camera that will drain the battery real quick! Anyway, hope we can track down the problem.

  9. Similar problem to preed….Had iphone playing thru BMW stereo via aux. connection. (Thanks apple, for helping me hone my MacGuyver AND whittling skills!)Went into store, left car running, music playing. Come back 2 mins. later, iPhone has become iPaperweight. Had a full charge- charged thru the night, this happened this am.

  11. Yea- today I had about a %75 charge- bluetooth and Wireless were off- even the sound toggle was off- slept 6 hrs and when I got up it had no charge left- had to charge it a while to use it- no calls or alarms- sound off anyway- was warm also.

  13. Worse happened to me. I knew the power was running low, I had finished watching a video podcast. The iPhone was indeed hot to the touch. When I came back to it later it had died. Could not even see the connect to power screen. Have tried everything and cannot bring my iPhone back to life. I think it could be gone for good.

  15. Me too. Went to bed with 75% charge left, set alarm and put the phone to sleep. Woke up late and phone was completely dead. Today, I used the wall charger and tried 3 different outlets, and the phone would not charge or show that it was even getting power (no charging icon). Sometimes it does work, but 25% of the time it does nothing.

  17. Hmmm well guys I’m having the exact same problems as you all. I went to bed last night, I had just finished watching some movie trailers on my iPhone, on Safari at apple trailers.com. Plugged in my iPhone to charge as I normally would, I had about 70% of power left. Went to bed. I made sure to turn off wifi and BT, as I normally would. Now I wake up about 6hrs after only to see my battery level is at 20%, and the iPhone is hot to the touch (but not scorching). I was like What Tha _ _ _ _. Anyways I said hhmmmm plugged it out, tried a different socket in my house. The battery level now fell to 10% and the device was still hot. Finally I power off the device, and left it to charge. The device now feels normal to touch (no heat) upon checking I notice that the battery is finally charging its at about 40% now….will be observing keenly over the next few days…because I have this device for less than 3wks now…and if it dies on me I’ll wait on the 2nd Gen iPhone to be released..I want a complete refund..

  19. After keen observation, I realised that it was an Application that got stuck in a loop, so that process is what caused the device to run hot and drain the battery. The culprit here is Safari. After closely inspecting the crash.log file. iPhone running perfectly now. What I recommend is to do a reboot of the device to kill any apps that may be running in the background before you go to bed and leave it to charge….

  23. I’ve had my iPhone since July 7. All was well until the 3rd week in October when the battery began to drain very quickly. Normally, I only have to charge the phone every two days. I don’t use WiFi, bluetooth or have any power draining apps turned on. But now I’m having to recharge every night. Something’s definitely gone wrong!

  25. I have been having the same problem for the last week, The battery going from 60% to 10% in a matter of minutes with the top of the phone (by the lock button) getting extremely hot. I had just been ignoring it thinking I had just used it a lot that day. Today, take it off the charger at 11:00am. I make no more than 5 mins of phone calls. Check 4 emails. No Safari, No iPod, Nothing other than phone and email. Go to make a call at 7:30pm and nothing. Totally dead. Sits on the charger for 35 minutes before it would let me do anything.Has anyone come up with a fix or any sort of solution to this problem other than the reboot everynight?

  27. similar issue here. have had no problems with battery life until 10/27. Now I go from 100% to about 50% in approx 3 hours. Had to recharge the phone 3 separate times yesterday…

  29. I talked to apple support about my problem today. I am sending to apple tomorrow (they tried to charge me $30 for a loaner… I spend 600 and they want another 30 out of me) to see if they can figure out what is wrong. I will post what comes out of it.

  31. I just checked my status on apple’s support site and it says they have replaced it. Step 1 – Request Product received by repair center (31-Oct-2007) Step 2 – Service Product Replaced (31-Oct-2007)Must be something really wrong and not just our imagination. Now I’m pissed that I have to buy a new screen protector.

  33. I’ve had my iPhone since early Sept., but never any battery problems until yesterday. Yesterday, battery was about 3/4 full, so I put on charger to bring to full charge. When I returned an hour later, the green was LESS than it had been before charging. In a matter of minutes, got so drained, the red appeared and nothing seemed to be happening. Just left it and returned 2 hrs later and saw that it was FINALLY beginning to charge. Then after about 4 hrs total, got to full charge and has been normal since last night. Makes me wonder if it’ll happen again. Don’t know the cause. Maybe it’s what one post above said, an application that got stuck in a loop.

  35. Well the replacement that Apple sent me is doing the same thing. Took it off the charger at 7am. Checked an email at 1pm when it popped up and said ‘less than 10%’ So I looked at the usage and it showed 56 minutes of use. Then it died. This is getting a bit out of hand.

  37. If anyone is having this problem still, try to change how you charge it. I was charging with the block and cable that came in the iPhone box. I talked to apple and they are sending a new block and cord. So last night I charged my iphone with an old ipod cable and my computer. I am past the point where it died yesterday and still have 100% charge.

  39. The same thing is happening to me. I do not believe it has anything to do with the charger. My phone was fully charged this morning when I went to work at 8am. By noon, the battery had fully depleted itself, and I wasn’t even using it for anything. I did notice it was hot at around 11:30 and the battery showed at 20%. Within 30 minutes, the phone is now dead. There was one poster above that said he thinks the problem has to do with Safari getting stuck in a loop. I will reboot my iPhone the next time I notice this, but they need to patch this FAST!

  41. Uggh and Randy (what is happening to you is exactly what I was experiencing). Charge it off your computer for a night and see how it does the next day. Just make sure your computer doesn’t go to sleep or standby overnight. Apple sent me a new charger and I am still nearly fully charged at the end of the day. Give it a shot (can’t hurt) and post your results.

  43. i had the same problem the last two days after updating to 1.1.2. Phone is in pocket, charged 80% or so and 3hrs later when I want to use it, its dead, on plugin, it shows less than 10% charge. It happened yesterday and today and hope this wont be a reg occurence.

  45. Until I did a bit of googling I thought it was just me! My wife and I are both having this exact same issue!! I will check through the crash.log files tonight as that sounds really promising. As well, I am going to give the charging with an old iPod charger a go.Something is very wrong as this thing won’t stay charged AT ALL.Grr.

  47. Ok, i have the same problem. I took it a step farther though, i replaced the battery, which didn’t do the trick after all.Apple did confirm that it is a software problem. So I recommend all junkies like myself not to open up the case. From my experience, If you do that and walk into the apple store, apple will not take the phone back, regardless if you want to replace it or not.So i bought another iPhone this morning. works ok, has 1.1.1 on it…I cannot update it to 1.1.2 yet. it wont let me.I plan on fixing the original iPhone at a later date.

  49. Guyz,I have the same problem too, I come to work with a full charged phone and for no somereason I end up with a dead phone by the lunch in the noon. My phone even gets warm sometimes when this actually happens. SOmetimes I shut it down and restart it and that saves the loss, I guess its the way the programs keep running in the memory. Even though we close the program, it looks like its not really closed rather it keeps eating up the power in the phone, just my thoughts. You try to restart your phone and post back if you see any difference.

  53. Hmm, same issue with my brand new phone. I picked it up a week ago and had no problems till yesterday. Now, I charge it with the block and it dies within 2-3 hours. AT&T provided -0- support and Apple wants $30 for a loaner plus 2 weeks repair time. AT&T told me Apple does all the post-sales warranty and repair work. I like the phone, but I am horribly disappointed in the support system. AT&T did offer to take the phone back for a 15% restocking fee and sell me a new one. Yeah, right…

  55. Ok, I found out something today. I think the problem was due to the fact that I had “Auto join Networks” enabled. My phone was at 100% charged this morning until I came to work, then the battery started draining rapidly. The battery was down to 20% within 4 hours and the phone was exceedingly hot to the touch. I disabled Auto join Networks and my phone started cooling off quickly (~15 mins or so) and my battery is still at 20% 3 hours later. Hope this helps. Too bad Apple already sent me my repair return box. heh

  57. I have had this issue sporadically (two or three times in the two months I’ve owned the phone) until Monday. Two days in a row, full overnight charges went to zip by shortly after lunch. I read the post about Safari being in a loop. So, I did a cold reboot and charged it again last night (same block charger it came with). It’s nearly 3pm and the battery is still full (or very close to it). From now on, I’m going to cold boot the phone every time I hook up the charger.

  59. I didn’t have this problem until last week when the latest update came out after MacWorld. Now my phone gets super hot, the battery drains to 50 percent after using it only an hour! I am so pissed! I used it on the train to work today and I haven’t used it since….yet I just checked the battery and it keeps draining even though i have it in sleep mode! this really stinks! i did a reboot and see if that helps.

  61. hi I have the same problem ( first my iphone dosen’t show a battery sharge full) Now , i try to sharge my iphone but i couldn’t , it seems it dosen’t work . I try with mcbook and adapter but nothing happen:( is there any body who can help me . Thanks

  62. My wife and I each have an iPhone. Mine has been working flawlessly, with no battery issues at all. Hers, just recently started dieing way too quickly. Me, I use the devil out of it, music, movies, web, email, etc. Her, she may make a few calls, SMS, notes..that’s it. The main difference is that I charge mine through my laptop, hers is always charged using the block charger from the wall. I’ll try some of the “tips” in here, and see if I can get hers to work again. I’ve got like a dozen old phones she can use while hers gets fixed, if indeed it needs it, but really odd that two like devices bought at the exact same time would have differing results 🙂

  65. My iphone has worked great up until 3 days ago, when it started to drain REALLY fast. I was so frustrated. Well, I went into the apple store to talk to one of their Genius Bar People, and within two minutes he gave me a new iPhone! I am very happy right now. Also, I WILL NOT be updating to 1.1.3. Good luck everyone!

  67. I depleted my iPhone’s power all the way….so i wouldn’t turn back on and when i went to charge it there is no indication that it is charging. i’ve tried rebooting it (holding the power and sleep buttons) and there is nothing. i haven’t noticed too many problems with the power before other than the usual and i’ve let it deplete entirely a few times….any ideas….i need some help.

  69. I just rec’d my iPhone from a buddy to use on Tmobile. Worked fine the first day, until I plugged it into a Maxell Car Charger…. Oooops, nearly fried the thing. Learned about Reboot, scary thought it was dead for good. Today worked alright, although seems like battery does die quick. Bought a new Belkin car charger…. thought I fried it again, got hot after maybe one minute, unplugged, had to reboot again. Now it doesn’t seem to want to charge, will try the USB Port instead of the brick, and turning off the auto-join network setting. Hope I can get this fixed, so far except for that I’m loving my iPhone.

  71. Same issue here, I cant get to the end of the day without having to charge it by 9:00 PM. I am not a heavy user, most of the day at work until 6, were I use it just for few calls and email. Then I use it for music while working out for 1 hour and thats it, already dead battery by 9:00 PM. Thats the IPhone 16GB. Lat night as usuall I put the phone for charge and this morning walk up on the alarm but it wasnt charching, and it showed the batter dead, even though I can see the charge mode on the phone!…. I kept charging the phone all morning and the same problem. I tried to soft reset it twice then the battery showed full. I am really confused. Went to Apple store and luckly its within the 14 days, so they will exchange it with new one. Unluckly they are out of stock and I need to wait. They offered me to exchange it with one that genius has but its not from the box, they say its brand new but it doesnt have a box. I didnt like the idea so I rather wait for them to get their next shipment. I am really disappointed from the life of this battery, otherwise I am in love with this phone and glad to have this site to share ideas with you all.

  75. I’ve been having similar issues recently; I’ve had my phone for ~8 months, and only recently (seems like since the 1.1.3 update?) has this issue manifested; details follow…The problem occurs even when the phone is fully charged, so it’s not a battery drain issue.Typical scenario is that I’ll use the phone, put it aside or in my pocket (without hitting power button to make it sleep); when I retrieve it, say, 30 mins later, the screen is blank (as should be normal); however, when I hit the “home” button to wake it, no response. At this point, one of the following three things is required to wake the phone1. Hold down the power button at upper right for ~2-5s … about 50% of the time this will wake the phone (although I don’t think it’s waking, it appears to be powering up as the apple logo comes up and it takes ~30s for the phone to be useable…so somehow the phone has shut itself off?!?)2. If that doesn’t work, I’ll then hold down the power & home buttons simultaneously … about 30% of the time, this causes the phone to come up (again, a “boot” as above, not wake)3. If that still doesn’t work, I have to plug in the power adapter, which causes the apple logo to immediately come up (without my having pressed the power button, mind you) and the phone boots up and becomes usable. Note, though, that in this case the battery does not show depleted, it’s typically at 30% or greater.

  77. I purchased my phone early.. had to go through the rebate ordeal etc etc.. Two weeks ago.. it got So HOT i couldn’t touch it.. it was Scary i thought it was going to explode.. then it wouldn’t do anything but heat up when i touched anything.. nothing i did worked.. Called apple..next day i had a service phone, sent mine back..and two days later they sent me a New Phone.. well i think it’s new.. it acts a little funny i can’t get on wifi at home with it.. but i’m scared to do anything .. i think they are having issues.. they aren’t sharing info on.. they were way to easy to replace my phone!.. i mean i think it’s probably a burn hazard and it’s possible someone somewhere knows about it….. just my opinion..but my $599 opinion!

  79. Well, I purchased my first 16GB iPhone model 3 days ago and already have battery problems. I took it by my local Apple store but I was given some tips that I already tried to save battery life. I was told politely that I would need to schedule an appointment with a “Genius” in order to get some trouble shooting done. My wife also has an 8GB iPhone we got about 2 weeks earlier that works great with about 3 days of use. Mine on the other hand dies in about 8 hours with no use. I have narrowed the problem down to the built in wi-fi. When you hold my wife’s phone and mine next to each other you immediately notice that the wireless and wi-fi signals are much less. I noticed my wi-fi would drop in and out while my wife’s phone shows full signal. I suspect that the phone has a wi-fi chip or antenna problem as it continually seems to be searching for a signal. I’ve turned off the wi-fi for now so see if this improves the phone performance. I’m still going to trade it in for another. If you pay $499 for a phone you want it all to work well.

  81. I just got a 16GB iPhone and the battery is uncharged out of the box. I charged it up a little and it activated fine, and it’s back on the AC charging up to full. Should I just up and return this? Is this a common problem?

  83. I exchanged mine at the apple store and the new one works perfectly. Seems the first one was a dud. Battery life only seems to affect certain units. Apple is aware of the issue.

  85. I’m back! Okay, I bought a 16gb iphone as soon as it was released. First, the speaker was broken (whoever called me would hear their own voice repeat back to them right after they spoke)!I took it to the Genius Bar, they made a call and I was on my way with a new phone. Great. Now, the reception is horrible, whereas my roomate’s iphone gets FULL STRENGTH!!! Also, my battery is nearly half-Down by the evening with very light use, whereas his is still full! So, I’ve set up another Genius bar appointment for tomorrow, so I’ll let you all know how it goes…

  87. Here I am… Again. So I had my Genius Bar appointment this morning. I told him about the weak signal strength, poor battery and random shuffling of music.’Let’s swap it out’, he said.A minute later he came back and informed me that they didn’t have any in stock:’It’s strange, I had 4 left an hour ago’An HOUR AGO???!This means that A LOT of 16gb iPhones are having problems and are being returned/exchanged. Wow!So I set up an appointment in the next town to hopefully swap my bad phone out. I drove over the hill and waited in the store for my name to be called. I informed the Genius about my phone and he went to go see if they had any in stock. My heart was racing. He came back and told me that they had ONE left! Thank god. I set up my new iphone and was on my way, praying I’d never have to exchange my phone again!

  89. My iPhone is dead, won’t even turn on. Got hot, went dead, no sign of life at all. Wall charger, USB charger, iTunes restore … it’s just a little heating brick now. I can “charge it” and use it as a heating pad for an hour. Software issue? Meh, feels like a short to me.

  95. Hi all, I think I finally figured this problem out!I started to notice a message popup each time I was on a call:”Edge data blah blah while on a voice call”This means that somehow my phone was using edge constantly – even in standby mode which was draining the battery. So how did I fix it?I went into General Settings – at the bottom push reset – and select all settings. You do loose your favorite numbers – but thats a small price to pay for your battery – just add your favorite numbers again. So far so goos – let me know if it helps.

  97. Yesterday I dropped my fully charged iphone onto pavement, it was about a 3ft. drop, luckily the faceplate, camera, mic, and speakers were apparently undamaged. But low and behold at the end of the day (3hrs later) the phone was very hot and at the dreaded 10% battery point. I was alittle afraid at the time, but also noticed that my youtube browser had been open as well as the wifi all day and thought that this was perhaps the reason. Well, that night I recharged my phone, after charging all night, and taking MUCH longer to charge than it should have, it looked fully charged in the morning. After being on standby all day it was ONCE AGAIN at below 10%! I went online and googled “Dropped my iphone battery problems” and found this board. I tried restarting my phone, powering it down, resetting ALL general settings, even a phone restore. Then I recharged my phone overnight. This time it seemed to charge as it should, 4hrs total, 2 hours to 80% and the other 2 hours to 100%. Well when I left today at about 11:00AM the charge was full, then later today (about 2:30pm-ish) my phone is listing a usage time of 1hr 9min, and a standby of 50min, with a battery charge of 20%!!! This coupled with the fact that my phone was STILL GETTING WARM anytime it wasn’t in standby mode. So I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and made an appointment to see one of the experts at the local store for tommorow at 3:00pm. I’ll let you know how it goes, I’m hoping they will just hook me up with a new phone. I don’t feel like waiting 2+weeks for a repair job that may or may not take. It seems ridiculous that a 3ft drop with virtually NO damage aside from a few tiny nicks in the back plate would compromise the iphone’s battery power as thus…

  103. hello, i also have had this problem for the past 3 days, noticing how fast it drains the battery charge and how it heats up. i just went to the setting–usage, and noticed that it says 7 h 30 m usage and 1 h 30 standby since the last full charge while it should be vise versa. turning off the network option and wifi option when not using those options should help and try restarting the iphone before putting it to charge.i turned of wifi and ask to join network options and turned it off and put if on charge for 35 min… the charge bar went to 50% and it has remained there for the past 3 hours although i used it to test any difference by watching videos and talking on the phone. the good news is that it is not a hardware issue and it is temporary. apple is working on this BUG, as i read on different websites and soon they’ll take care of it with their next software update.moreover, many ppl’s iphones just went back to norm after a week or so.so dont be tooooo worried.cheers

  111. I have the 1st generation iPhone that I received new in Feb 2008. My battery has not been keep a normal charge as of July 11, when I downloaded the recent firmware 2.0. I thought because I downloaded 10+ applications I was draining the battery. I accepted it as I was testing out the different applications. Now that I am a little over downloading applications I have noticed the last two days that my battery will not keep a charge. Yesterday, my phone was fully charged at 8am and by 1pm it was at 20% and I never once touched my phone from 9a-1. Today the same thing, although at 1pm my phone was completely dead and off. I have been charging with the block and it takes forever for it to charge and gets really warm. I just got done reading all the post on this blog and have plugged my iPhone into my computer with an old USB ipod charger. It has been plugged in for about 20 minutes now and seems to bee charing and not warm at all. Hope this works.

  113. i have had similar problem with 2 iphone after updating the software to 2.0. the battery will get hot even without using the phone, and drain my battery that I have to charge it almost every day without using the phone. it used to last 3 or 4 days…Also started having error on the screen when the phone heat up repair is needed you cannor make or recieve phone calls….Any body is experiencing the same problems solutions?

  114. in my iphone there is no files at all. even though its shows 75% memory full, im able to acces only remainig memory, its 8GB iphone, pls help me to do my iphone better, thanks ShaF

  115. well i had a problem with my iphone, i was talkingh to a friend with my earphones while my phone was charging, and instead of the phone getting charged it literarly died on me 2wice xPP

  116. 10-22-08 – The past two nights I have had my batter drain from 100% to about 25% with no wifi, no bluetooth, no location service, no phone use, no app use. It's been sleeping all night and still somehow draining battery life like a sumbitch.

  117. Yup I've been having the same problem since yesterday…the usage time is same as the stand by time…some app is running in the background and causing the battery to drain…i am waiting and watching to see if this is a recurring problem…if it is maybe i will remove some of the apps i installed in the last few days….but definitely a bug that apple should look into…

  118. I agree it's to do with the upgrade of 2.0. That's when most of the problems started. Garbled voice, battery life down to nothing, email won't send or receive, internet slow. I called ATT and they said to replace the sim card. Went to a local store and replace the sim. The clerk told me he didn't think it had anything to do with it. I charge all night last night, battery indicated is in the red, charge in the car while at work still nothing. By the way my warranty ran out two weeks ago, seems strange.

  119. Had a similar problem crop up today. iPhone 3G worked all day yesterday, talked about an hour total..no problems. Plugged it in overnight, and this morning it was dead within 3 hours of no calls. Charged it again, and it is already down to flashing red batter indicator. Now i have it powered by usb and I think it is actually going down instead of charging on usb.

  120. I had a similar problem. The battery was going down normally, It got to 10% percent and later the thing went off. Up till now all of this is normal. What I can't figure out is that it doesn't show that it's charging at all. It seems completely dead even when it's connected to the power.I hope there's nothing fried inside. I hope I can find someone to replace the battery.

  121. I have had my phone for about 2 months and it has suddenly started losing power in a couple of hours. I have removed all applications and short of a reset, it is pretty much the way it was when I bought it. Took it to the local Apple store and they said to reset it on itunes back to factory settings. If it continues to driain power after that they would replace it. But I lose all my contacts that way so how do I back up my iphone

  122. I had a similiar problem today, my iPhone was in my pants pocket and it felt warm. When I tried to use it, the battery was dead and it would do absolutely nothing. Presently I am charging it on my laptop and wonder what will happen tomorrow.

  123. Did anyone install the new update that's supposed fix many bugs including battery life? I'm going to give it a try. It's Software Update 2.1

  124. I am having the same problem with battery running hard and not holding a charge for long. I actually just started having the problem after the 2.1 update. Perhaps it was coincidence? In any case, it doesn't seem to fix the battery drain problem.FYI – I've have my iPhone for about 6 weeks, and only 3 days ago started having problems (after the update).

  125. ****Update****I shut my iPhone down by pushing the top button and the bottom button at the same time – which actually shuts the phone down. Then I charged it overnight and it was fine the next day. I think that makes sense to do after each update, just like on your computer when it asks you to restart after an update.I am so happy my iPhone is back!

  126. Hello, I'm having the same iPhone problem. My charge is stuck in the red even when connected to a computer or charger. I notice your post was 3 weeks ago, did you manage to resolved the problem, and if so, how? Many thanksDave
