The Sunset Limited, by Cormac McCarthy

This is a new play by McCarthy — I guess it played off Broadway this year. Sort of formula, seems to me. Story of a guy who tries to kill himself, is saved by another guy (who is born again), and they have a conversation about belief. Wasn’t my favorite thing, but I generally don’t like reading plays all that much.

  1. I am reading this play with a small group of 12 Grade students, and I have read the play a couple of times. I find McCarthy's writing very significant and this little work sets up the parameters of belief and non-belief very well. Also, it really presents a consistent pattern of language and thought that is amazing. Black can not escape his linguistics nor can White so there is a standoff in ideas and a standoff in discourse. I found it to be very powerful as is all his writing.
